The Methods of Asbestos Tile Removal

The methods of asbestos tile removal are many and varied, depending upon the amount of tile to be removed.  Since there are health concerns, in relation to asbestos, its removal should be a cautious task.  Special clothing protection for the individual who is removing the asbestos should be used. This includes gloves, clothes that cover the entire body, a respirator, and goggles.  Immediately after the asbestos removal, the individual should shower to remove any residue that was acquired.  If all of these steps are followed, then any hazardous health problems that could occur from this asbestos will not be endured by the participating individual.

Special equipment designed specifically for asbestos tile removal can aide in both the removal and related health results.  These instruments include duct tape, utility knife, polyethylene sheets, putty knife (metal), and disposable bags.  When using all of this equipment, there is less chance of exposure to the asbestos as well as contamination of this hazardous material to other areas of the house or building.

When disposing of the asbestos material, it should be remembered to discard  this waste in compliance with the federal environmental regulations.  Since we are all concerned with the future conditions of the environment, this is an important factor when working with hazardous materials.

The procedure of asbestos tile removal has various steps as follows:

Step 1

Wet strip the floor.  This is accomplished by wetting the floor surface with water which a surfactant has been added.  This type of water is called amended water.  The liquid soaks up the asbestos, thus decreasing the amount of this material to be airborne.  This creates less asbestos for the individual removing the asbestos to breathe.

Step 2

The asbestos tile should be removed from the outer edges inwardly, working toward the middle of the area desired to have the tile removed.

Step 3

Initially the first tile should be loose-need with a putty knife and a hammer. After this is accomplished, a putty knife should be placed under each tile and lifted to a 45 degree angle.  The tiles should be loosened and/ or removed in big chunks, so that a large amount of asbestos powder will not contaminate the area and the individuals present.

Step 4

The area must be cleaned immediately after the tile is removed.  The asbestos tile should be thrown away in appropriate waste bags, and the area and tools should be cleaned thoroughly.

Step 5

Depending upon the location of the asbestos is to whether the laws state that trained professionals  must be  hired to rid of the hazardous waste.  Removal actions must be contingent upon local regulations.

All in all, asbestos is a material that has been proven to be harmful to one’s health and to the environment.  It is imperative that this type of material be removed with precautionary procedures and/ or measures.  If special guidelines are not carefully followed in asbestos tile removal, there can be both immediate and future complications.  Skilled and trained individuals who are experienced in asbestos removal should be hired, especially if one has no knowledge or prior experience in this area.
